I Hate Dandelions!
May 22, 2006 at 2:52 am | In Christian, Jesus, family | 1 Comment5/15/06 I hate Dandelions! This is the weed that turns my beautiful green yard into yellow uglyies. I have created a new ministry called Backyard Sanctification. Every Monday it’s "Kill the Dandelion Day". Once a week I work the yard with a shovel, wheel barrel, and some grass seed and intentionally dig holes across the lawn in a serious effort to remove them nasty no good weeds. Along the way I have uncovered some wonderful spiritual enlightenments. Dig this!
BACKYARD SANCTIFICATION
Wherever the dandelion grows, grass is smothered out.
Every time I dig out a weed I assign a prayer for someone or something to that weed and ask God to remove a hindrance.
I must pull out the entire root or else IT WILL grow back.
Always throw the weed into the fire pit so it is completely destroyed and seeds don’t spread.
Always put on grass seed in place of the removed root.
Start in one small spot and completely clear it. Each time I begin by making sure no new dandelions have returned in places already cleared, then I expand from there.
Never worry about what the neighbors think. Neighbors look at me like I’m crazy and talk about what I’m doing. One day when our yard is green, what will they say or think when theirs is still all yellow? I hope they ask how they can get their yard like mine. (Always be prepared to have an answer for the hope that lies within.)
The yard will look worst when you first start but in the end it will be more beautiful than you ever could imagine. The job will seem impossible at first but press on and you will succeed in the end.
If I ever think, "I’m there" and neglect to keep it up, Their yellow yard will overcome my green yard again.
Weird Side note like a CrackerJack surprise. There is a worm at the bottom of every root. (At least in my yard)
KEYCODE:
The Dandelion is an area of sin in my life.
The depth of the root is the power of that sin in my life.
The grass seed is the "put on" the shovel is the power of God used to "put off the old".
The yard is my Christian walk.
The neighbors are the unbelievers watching my life.
Final Note: I was in the yard digging out the weeds and explaining to my wife how in the end God will throw everyone’s work into the fire and whatever burns will be lost, then I realized one of my neighbors was right behind me as I lifted my head and caught his eyes. He had the strangest look.

No offense meant, but why do you hate dandelions? I see them as a cheerful little plant that actually does illustrate God’s principles of caring for His creation very well. Look at it this way: I don’t plant, water, or nourish the dandelions: they just grow where the good Lord puts ‘em. He cares for them, sends the rain for them and fertilizes them. I don’t have to do anything for them. In turn, the dandelions nourish insects such as bees, and they bring me great joy as I wake up in the morning and go to school. It’s a win-win situation, IMHO.
They’re practically modern-day “lilies of the field”!
Also, dandelions were brought to America by European settlers for a two-fold purpose: to feed their honeybees and to provide medicine and food for the settlers. Dandelions are edible and are rich in vitamins; they can be put in salads, fried, or made into a beverage.
Instead of killing your dandelions, why not make them into a salad or other foodstuff? Just Google up “dandelion recipes” and you’ll come up with some neat stuff! (Of course, do not eat sprayed or poisoned dandelions!) Just a thought.
Peace,
